Lowepro Backpacks and Camera Bags have quite a name in the bags industry. The company has been in business for over 50 years now and are well recognized for making high-quality bags that last a very long time. But the thing is, the same can be said about a lot of other bag manufacturers. There are brands that sell bags for cheaper yet promise to offer the same level of quality and refinement. The question we will answer in this post is: Are Lowepro Backpacks and Camera Bags really worth the money? Let’s find out.
Lowepro is quite a popular name in the travelers’ community and the camera bags market. So, being an enthusiast, I too went for it. I got the LowerPro BP 20L Laptop Backpack for myself. Not only that, my friend has been using the Lowepro Fastpack BP 250 for over 2 years now. With that said, I think I can answer if Lowepro Backpacks and Camera Bags are worth the money.

My experience with Lowepro Laptop Backpack
As much as I like to be prepared for all kinds of situations, there was this one time where I had to go for a long road time and my eBags backpack (review) had just given up on me.
Even if it was an impromptu decision, I didn’t shy out to spend my money on a new backpack. Since I write about backpacks for a living, it was a perfect opportunity for me to go and get a new one. And, anyway, I don’t have any problem owning more than one backpack at a time.
My friend always talked good things about his Lowepro Fastpack BP 2015. And so, I decided to give LowePro a shot.
After browsing through the entire Lowepro laptop backpack lineup, I got the Lowepro Urbex BP 20L. That’s the smallest of their Urbex line, and it is meant for content creators carrying a laptop and a few accessories. Lowepro sold a 30L variant too but I thought it was overkill.
I am no sophisticated content creator and just carry my laptop and my mirrorless camera with me. So, the Lowepro Urbex BP 20L was the obvious choice. It cost me somewhere around $50, which is significantly cheaper than both my regular eBags Laptop backpack and my primary travel Osprey bag (review).
I was happy with my decision. The Urbex BP was exactly what I needed at the time. It has a primary laptop compartment that fits most 15″ laptops easy, plus up to a 10″ tablet as well. I was able to fit the iPad Pro 10.5 without any issue alongside my MacBook Pro 13.
And besides that, there’s a lot of space for carrying clothes and everything else. Perfect for traveling. The integrated “gear-box” inside makes for customizable storage, And the best thing about this backpack is the In-harness Mobile Bag that can be easily accessed from the side.
You can carry your most used items or the ones you most frequently take out. This makes it immensely convenient! It wasn’t a hassle even when I had to take out my passport every time.
In addition, the bag was highly comfortable from the shoulder straps and also at the back. I had long hours of carrying the backpack and walking as well, but I faced a negligible amount of discomfort. And that too was not due to the bag, but the clothing I had on.
And I also took the time to learn about any kind of warranties they had. Of course, it was nothing cool like Osprey’s, but their Limited Warranty does last as long as we own the bag. The warranty only covers manufacturing defects and product defects though. But since the bag is built like a tank, I doubt I will be claiming the warranty anytime soon.
Where to Buy Lowepro Bags from?
Well, you can buy Lowepro bags from any popular online store like Amazon or NewEgg. You can, of course, buy it from the Lowepro official website but I recommend you buy it from other retailers. It’s common to see Lowepro bags and backpacks go on sell on other retails but not so much on their official website. But it’s not to say that you don’t ever see a sale on Lowepro’s official website. You do but it’s not very often.
If you don’t live in a country where Amazon, eBay, and major players of the eCommerce market aren’t present, your only option to get the bag from the official regional website itself. Because if you don’t do that, there are chances that you will end up getting fake Lowepro backpack.
So, it’s best you buy one from the Regional website if there isn’t a trusted retailer around your region. You can find the regional sellers according to the country from their websites. But you can also do the same when you go on the website and choose your region. Therefore, when you browse those bags, you can choose from a wide range of products right there.
I personally used the official website to keep track of all the kinds of bags that they sell. Often, retailers don’t have all the bags with them. There are backpack guides, camera bag guides, and various kinds of hints that will help you if you’re unsure of what you exactly want.
So, if you’re buying online, it’s a good idea to visit the official website, at least, once. And then look for retailers which are offering the same bag for a cheaper price.

Is Lowepro a Premium Brand?
Lowepro has been in the business for quite a while now. So, it isn’t surprising if you’ve seen others recommending you a Lowepro bag, should you be looking for a good one. The company has a good reputation of being reliable in the bags community.
And so, it goes without saying that Lowepro is a premium brand. But premium doesn’t necessarily mean only focusing on the high-price segment, mind you. Premium also means higher-than-standard quality, and that’s what it is. But of course, Lowepro bags are not that cheap either. Lowepro backpacks may run you very well over $400. But if you are looking for an entry-level bag, you can also find Lowepro bags for as less as $30!
Of course, there’s a huge difference between an entry-level Lowepro backpack and a a full fledged camera bag for your DSLR. But the point is, Lowepro is not only there in the high-budget market segment.
You can find a large assortment of product types- carrying cases, camera bags, backpacks, and even drone cases! Their camera bags are even more diverse, you can literally be overwhelmed by the sheer number of them, should you choose to get one. But whatever the case may be, Lowepro is a premium brand, that has its presence in all kinds of market segments.
The origin of Lowepro is, more or less, like any other backpack company out there. It’s in its fifth decade of operation currently. And it started out as an outdoor equipment manufacturer in the suburbs of Colorado back in 1967. Come to think of it, why do most bags come from Colorado? Go figure… Anyways, the people behind it were Mike, Jeff, and Greg Lowe. They were adventurers, known for their outdoor activities like skiing, climbing, and photography. So, they came up with close-fitting backpacks to carry photography equipment and stuff. And long story short, five decades later, it is one of the largest and most renown bag manufacturers out there with its headquarters in Petaluma, California.

Where are Lowepro Bags and Backpacks made?
Lowepro is a company that’s difficult to pinpoint exactly. The company is of US origin, but it was acquired by a Canadian company in 1989, with the rights of exclusive manufacture going to Canada despite Lowepro USA being an American company. It’s difficult to say where exactly it is made solely.
One of the company’s firms are in Canada, that is for certain. But there have been a few companies from China, that claim to manufacture Lowepro bags. However, there are a ton of fake and rip-offs of Lowepro bags out there available at prices that are too good to be true. So, you have to be skeptical about seeing a bag of such a premium brand there for such a low price.
And since such kind of bags is available easily in the likes of Amazon, Alibaba, and eBay, you might really trust them, too. But believe me, you have to be pretty gullible if you think you can get a LowePro bag for as less as $10. Hence, you have to be careful while purchasing a Lowepro bags online.
But, I have asked people around, and guess what? You can’t really tell the difference between knock-offs and the real deal. They have bought Lowepro bags for very low prices and even in some 2-3 years of usage, it’s still okay. But of course, they may just be lucky. As for me, I wouldn’t trust that kind of purchase. I would not mind paying a bit of a high price for the original.back to menu ↑
Why are Lowepro Bags so expensive?
Even though you can find knock-offs of Lowepro bags that are really difficult to distinguish, the genuine products are quite expensive. If you really want to get the real deal, these bags can go very well up to $400, as I already said. Of course, that depends on the product, because you can get cases for like $30, or a normal school backpack for some $70. But anything else will have you making quite a dent in your pocket. So, make sure you really want one!
Anyways, back to the question at hand. Why are Lowepro bags so expensive? Well, there are plenty of reasons. But I’d like to credit it all to their innovative technology that goes into manufacturing their premium bags. This technology has allowed them to manufacture bags that are comfortable, accessible, highly durable, stylish, organized and everything. Of course, depending on the type of what you value most, you can choose from a lot of options. Which can be another reason why the bags are so expensive.
I mean, when you have such a wide range of diversified products, it’s only natural, that you make less of each. That means the cost goes high up. Also, with the factories being located in countries where labor cost is not as cheap, the price will not be very forgiving.
But all of their bags share some qualities. First, most of the Lowepro backpacks, come with their patented protective rain cover. Plus, the ones that are built for the impact have the FormShell Impact protection system – making it ultralight and at the same time, ultra-strong! And what’s the handiest feature, perhaps, is that all of their backpacks are made with waterproof materials.
In addition, depending on the stuff you’ll buy, these bags feature convenient heavy lifting support and carry systems. Furthermore, there are other features like flexible organizing, gear stabilization, expandable gear compartment, etc. So, you get the point.back to menu ↑
For any kind of premium bag manufacturers, there’s a lot of competition out there. And even though Lowepro is kind of a household name and a large manufacturer, it has its competitors.
The major alternatives of Lowepro are Vanguard, Peak Design, Click Elite, and Think Tank. They are pretty similar to Lowepro in the sense that they don’t only make bags but a range of outdoor products. If you look further, there’s CamelBak, Gossamer Gear, Timbuk2, and never forget the mainstreams – Reebok and North Face.back to menu ↑
Are Lowepro Bags and Backpacks worth the money?
In my short time with it, I can say that Lowepro bags are definitely worth it. Now, of course, I have not used it extensively nor had it for years or something. But with all my experiences with such premium bag brands, I’ve never been disappointed once.
And I can tell that Lowepro is not something that will disappoint you, either. It’s got all the qualities that you would want in any other bag that you can actually carry around for years to come. So, I didn’t have to wait for 2-3 years to come out and say this. And the Internet too believes that Lowepro bags are really well made, not just me.
I have been using the Lowepro BP 20 as my daily driver after my first trip and it’s been really comfortable. And this is quite a feat considering that this Lowepro backpack is the company’s one of the cheaper offering.
The backpack also looks great and can carry a lot of items inside. It has got good shoulder and back support. And it did check all the boxes. So, I can say it with a straight face – Lowepro bags are definitely worth the money.
Therefore, even with me having a premium camera bag and a traveling backpack, I don’t regret buying another such bag from Lowepro at all. It does have its value.
In addition to being really well built, Lowepro takes after-sales really seriously. If you have any issue with the bag while inside warranty, the company will either replace the bag or repair the bag for fee- no questions asked.
However, Lowepro bags have its own set of issues. First, if you are someone who is brand conscious, you may not be find much brand value here. Sure, it’s popularity is growing everyday but it’s still nowhere as premium as other backpack brands.
Secondly, I think the premium offerings from Lowepro- the ones that cost north of $300 are definitely not worth the money. The return on investment is low especially considering that the lower-end Lowepro bags can be had for half the price.
Lastly, not everyone is going to be fond of Lowepro bag designs. They are rugged and built for purpose. So, if you look for some fancy designs, chances are, you will be left disappointed.
So, there you go. This was my take on “Are Lowepro Bagpacks and Camera Bags worth the money?” If you ask me, would I get another Lowepro bag? My answer would be definitely!
