Buying Guide- Best Sleeves and Covers for MacBook Air with Retina Display

There are a couple to things you should know before you go out and get yourself a new laptop sleeve for your MacBook Air with Retina Display. Here are a few.

Materials used

The first thing you should look for in a laptop sleeve is the materials used in the making of a laptop sleeve. You will want to get a sleeve that is able to resist drops to some extent. Sure, if you drop your MacBook from 1m of height or more, no matter how good of a sleeve you put on, you will have a dent in your laptop.

Also, make sure that the sleeve has a soft lining on the inside and doesn’t scratch the aluminum body of the Retina MacBook Air.

Size and Thickness

Don’t buy a sleeve that is meant for a 15-inch laptop. And definitely avoid sleeves meant for the 12-inch laptop such as the Apple MacBook. If you get an oversized sleeve, it will leave a lot of room for wiggle and you will at some point end of scratching your laptop.

And I also suggest you avoid sleeves that are too thick. Many options will come with a lot of compartments that will let you carry all the accessories for your MacBook and some. But ask yourself, do you really need it? Chances are you won’t.

Design and Color options

You will find Retina MacBook Air sleeves of all kinds on the Internet. Here, you are free to choose whatever you like. However, when it comes to color options, I suggest you go with darker color options. The lighter ones get dirty quick and it can be a hassle cleaning it up.

Some sleeves are water-resistance while others aren’t. If the price difference isn’t too much, it’s also better to go with a water-resistant model. However, I don’t think it is a crucial feature to have. Most sleeves already do a decent job of resisting water and having the water-resistant label doesn’t make too much of a difference.

FAQ on Sleeves for the MacBook Air with Retina Display

1) Does the MacBook Pro 13 sleeve fit the new MacBook Air?
Yes, unlike laptop cases which need to be precise and exact in dimensions to fit, you can get any sleeve that is meant for a 13-inch laptop. In fact, you can go ahead and get a Dell XPS 13 Sleeve and you will still be fine.

2) Will the old MacBook Air sleeve fit the new MacBook Air with Retina Display?
Definitely! Just make sure it is not an 11-inch MacBook Air sleeve and you will be just fine. The new MacBook Air with Retina Display is definitely lighter, thinner and has shrunken dimensions but it really isn’t too much of a difference.

3) Can a laptop sleeve protect the new Air in case of a drop?
Yes, and it’s the sole purpose of buying a laptop sleeve. They are made from thick shock-absorbing materials which absorb the impact substantially. Bear in mind though, if you drop the MacBook Air from a substantial height, chances are, you will have dents on it. What I personally do and recommend others to do is keep the MacBook Air inside of the sleeve. And then put the sleeve inside your backpack. That way, you will have your expensive investment safe no matter where you go and how you handle your backpack.

4) Can laptop sleeves be placed inside of a laptop bag?
Yes. You can put laptop sleeves inside most backpacks. Unless your bag is extremely tiny, the sleeve for the MacBook Air will definitely fit inside.

5) Is genuine Apple sleeve for the MacBook Air worth the money?
If it were my money, I would never drop $160 for a laptop sleeve. Sure, the MacBook Air is a premium laptop and you have to pay extra to take care of it. But when you can get a sleeve that provides the same functionality for 1/10th the money, it’s a little too difficult to recommend the Apple-branded MacBook Air Retina Sleeve.
